We have a simple philosophy when it comes to coaching at Beam Running.
- Enjoy Running
- Train Smart
- Adapt
Enjoy Running
We believe that enjoying running is of the highest importance. You don’t have to love every single run. Let’s face it, hill repeats or a hard interval sessions are not always enjoyable. However overall you should be enjoying your running.
If you’re not enjoying your running it’s likely a sign something isn’t quite right. Maybe you’re over training, running through niggles or injuries, or not quite sure of a goal or purpose to your running. There are many factors that can influence this. The truth is if you’re not enjoying running you’re less likely to improve and may end up stuck in a rut or worse injured.
Train Smart
Train smart is a broad term. Training smart can mean something different for each runner. It depends on things like your training history, what you are training for and other life factors that you have to balance.
There are some key factors that are important to all runners, such as:
- training consistently,
- completing a variety of workouts to train different systems,
- recovering well between hard workouts and;
- training at an appropriate volume to improve fitness without over training.
There’s not one training program out there that’s perfect. At Beam Running we’re influenced by many different sources including Pfitzinger, Jack Daniels, 80/20 running, Lydiard and the Australian training system. We will incorporate different structures, sessions and ideas to develop the best training program for you.
Adapt
Finally it’s important to monitor and adapt.
We will monitor how you are responding to the training by looking at metrics such as heart rate, RPE, pace over time, race and time trial results and your feedback. Based on this we can make adjustments over time including adjusting paces or volume so that you get the best result from the training.
You may want to complete additional events that we can work into your training. Other life factors can come up that often can’t be avoided which may require training to be restructured.
The important thing is that we adapt where required, train smart and enjoy our running to get the best out of ourselves!

About the author : Ben Mudie
Ben is the head coach at Beam Running. Ben first took up running in 2013 and it changed his life. He now wants to share that with others.
Thanks Ben, was honestly everything I thought it would be. Was a lot of mental game from early on. You’re advice really helped. I really stuck to the plan and the last 10km I just took it 1km at a time and knew I had enough left in the tank to keep going. It was such an overwhelming experience something I’ve never had felt in my life. Again thank you for everything, I know in myself I would never have achieved what I did without your help and training.
Thanks to an amazing running program by my coach Ben Mudie!!!
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK @ben_mudie for helping me with my training plan for @austrunningfest half mara… I did it! PB!
Having my runs set out each week is probably my favourite thing. It’s very nice not having to think about it, allows me to laser focus each session and get the most out of it
